Lower Limit of Normal (LLN): The ATS/ERS statement on interpretation recommends the use of the Lower Limit of Normal (LLN) for the FEV1/FVC ratio as well as the FVC and FEV1. An FEV1 between 50-80 percent indicates moderate COPD. An FEV1 between 30-50 percent indicates severe COPD. An FEV1 of <30 percent indicates very severe COPD. The Relationship between FVC and FEV1. As you might guess, FVC and FEV1 are closely related.

Forced expiratory volume (FEV1) is the maximum amount of air you can forcefully exhale in one second. It is used to describe the degree of airway obstruction caused by asthma in a routine test called spirometry or pulmonary function testing, using an instrument called a spirometer.

This parameter is also known as the Tiffeneau index, named after the french physician that discovered the FEV1/VC ratio. Nowadays FEV1/FVC X100 is also accepted as FEV1% (FEV1/FVC ratio). Mit diesem Wert kann der Arzt vor allem feststellen, ob die Atemwege verengt sind. Um den Wert zu bestimmen, muss der Patient zunächst so tief wie möglich einatmen. Keep in mind, however, that some of the above data are based on the pre-thorascopy and pre-epidural eras, and may no longer be as applicable. For instance, classically FEV1 < 800 cc used to be an absolute contraindication to thoracic surgery, but no longer is. Note also that in order to cough effectively, VC ≥ 3 x TV. Flow-Volume Loops FEV1/FVC ratio as low as 50 % The FEV1/FEV6 ratio below LLN has a positive and negative predictive value of 97 % for diagnosis of airway obstruction When using fixed cut-offs, one may refers to the conclusion by two large population studies that FEV1/FEV6 < 0.73 is an valid alternative to the FEV1/FVC < 0.70 to diagnose airflow obstruction The prevalence of spirometry-based COPD is greater when using the fixed value of FEV1/FVC in comparison to using the LLN. Based on one longitudinal study the in-between group appears to have a higher risk of hospitalization and mortality; therefore it seems that using the LLN of FEV1/FVC underestima … VC (SVC) Vital capacity (slow vital capacity) Maximal amount of air exhaled steadily from full inspiration to maximal expiration (not time-dependent).
